Workplace Millennials Matter Generations Explained
Workplace Millennials Matter because of a unique population fact that will blow your mind. This video talks more specific about generations and what year each generation is from. It discusses how differences in populations for each generation lead to the conclusion that Workplace Millennials Matter!
A term for this phenomenon is the “Gen X sandwich.” It is termed a “sandwich” because it refers to two generational populations on either side of Generation X – each double its size! That’s right, both Traditionalists born before 1946 and Millennials born roughly in the early 80’s have over 80 million people while Generation X has only about 40 million people. How does this affect Millennials?
Consider Baby Boomers are reaching or have reached retirement age and even with a stagnant economy there will be theoretically twice as many job openings as experienced or trained people to fill them. When the Gen Xers run out because they only have half the population numbers, who will be left to fill these jobs? The answer is clearly the Millennials. This is one key reason workplace Millennials matter! We will need them and they will be in the workplace.
What is often over looked in this discussion is that Millennials will need jobs as well. The discussion of what Millennials want casts a net over all Millennials when what we are really talking about are Millennials with talent. If you have talent, defined as having a skill or experience that is in demand, or a level of expertise that is always in demand, then your needs matter. Many Millennials will enjoy leverage based on population statistics that will allow them to push for things like freedom of work schedule, work life balance, team environment, and continuous feedback. For most Millennials, ones without marketable “talent,” they will have to count on the collective needs of a generation demanding change for the unskilled commodity worker.
