UBM New York 2017 hosted the TeamWorx robot team building trade show event to great praise and competitive participation. The robot event included two parts, a building competition and a battle competition. This year both were won by the same team!
A team of Product Management Co-ops with their first trip to MDM from Ethicon Inc, a Johnson & Johnson company, not only beat the local competition on the trade show floor, they set a new World Record build time – dethroning a long standing record from Facebook and DropBox. Their time of 27 minutes and 37 seconds beat the old record of 38:04 by over 10 minutes! They also managed to win the BattleBot style robot battle competition. They were mechanical engineers by training, and very motivated to make their mark!
The robot battles took place on center stage to a good sized audience that cheered and yelled and gasped as the robots fought to disable reach other and/or pop a balloon clipped to the back of each robot. UBM did an outstanding job of making the event fun, organizing two wonderful venues, and inviting a special guest!
The event was energized by the appearance of a real BattleBot contender – SubZero! We got to listen to his presentation about building a real life BattleBot and his history with competitive robot battling. He educated and emphasized how important saving weight on every conceivable part of the Robot so you can add weight to armor, power, and force. His biggest and most recent change was adding a carbon fiber frame that saved him 20 pounds!
The technology and constant improvement that goes into these incredible fighting machines is our inspiration to continually improve our own fighting robots for the user experience and the reliability of the robots. We recently released our newest version of the robot battles robot that now includes a shaft drive fighting attack arm replacing the servo driven – and weaker – previous system. The result is better battles and more reliable performance under the duress of battle.
