Google Operations Battle Robots
Google operations battle robots in a fun and engaging team building event. A lively and enthusiastic group from Google’s operations areas happily built robots and then battled each other in robot combat.
Nine teams successfully built a Robot Battles 1 robot with the fastest team (pictured above) coming in well under the average build time of 45 minutes, with an impressive build time of 42:10 (forty two minutes and ten seconds).
Several teams followed soon after completing their robots within 2 minutes (plus or minus) of 45 minutes.
This led to 7 rounds of points-based combat and 1 round of “last-bot-standing.” The battles were spectacular with many exciting robot flips, balloon pops, and pushing robots outside of the arena. As a reminder, a team receives 1-point for each balloon they pop, 3-points for flipping a robot, and 1 point for pushing the robot out of the arena.
During the points-based battles, we had multiple winners and a few favorites emerged. Going into the last round, people were rooting for their own team, and also acknowledging two of the teams had a distinct advantage based on their drivers. If we were betting, I think I know which two teams the most money would be bet on, and a few teams that would have great odds! From all of those teams, Team #1 would have the longest odds for victory.
Team #1 arrived late and therefore finished their robot late. They had some electrical issues, and so their first battle was in fact our last battle. What shocked the crowd was that team #1 actually won the last-bot-standing competition! I was extremely proud of team #1 for their willingness to start late and their perseverance to complete the robot project regardless of obstacles. To see them win the ultimate battle was some kind of karma reaching out to us!
