Amazon Delivers Robot Battles
Amazon delivers robot battles team building event to a 4th floor office on Spear Street. About 30 spirited Amazon workers from the Amazon Fresh department, and one from an unknown department related to robotics, competed in 5 teams to build a robot faster than each other, and for the World Record.
Amazon Fresh is a grocery delivery service available to Amazon Prime members in major cities throughout the United States and certain cities worldwide. Members receive free two-hour grocery delivery on Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market orders that meet the minimum purchase threshold. Needless to say completing tasks on-time is one of their specialties! Building a robot correctly and fast was no exception.
Our venue was, in true downtown SF style, very small and doubled as the snack room. The advantages were large, flat, wooden tables for 4 teams, and a large dinner style rectangle wood table for Team 1, and concrete floors that served very well for the battles.
The winning build team was Team 1, pictured here, who actually built the robot in an adjacent area next to the snack area. They finished in a remarkable time of 39:48!
Team 1 also won the Last-Bot-Standing finale to claim the robot battles championship as well! We had no less than 10 rounds of points based combat on the snack area concrete floor leading up to the finale. Impressively, all 5 bots were functioning and ready for combat for the finale and teams chose the driver that gave them the best chance to achieve their specific team goal; mostly winning the finale and being crowned champion!
Overall the battles included numerous robot flips as the concrete floor allowed the robot fulcrum to tilt rather than slide, leading to elevation of the anterior battle arm and easy flipping. Scoring was high which means cheering and excitement were high!
