Genentech Robot Team Building Event
A Genentech Robot Team Building event yielded a super fast build time of 30:04 (thirty minutes and four seconds) placing them 29th all time of the World Record Robot Build list!
We have delivered over 250 robot build and battle events, so multiple that by an average 8-10 teams per event, and 29th out of 2,000 to 3,000 teams (10,000 to 15,000 people) seems very impressive!
I asked the team why they thought they did so well. Their three keys to their success as told to me:
- Committed two people to the frame
- Each person “did their part” accurately and efficiently
- They all liked assembling IKEA furniture!
Our event was at the impressive “DNA Way” campus in South San Francisco just South of Oyster Point Marina and Oyster Point Park. The campus is surrounded by water on 2 sides, and appears like 3 sides because of the unique geography to the Northeast that ultimately creates Oyster Point. The breeze is extraordinary, helped by the road elevating to a hilltop greeting the bay. It smells and feels refreshing and even a touch chilly on a hot day, as it was this day reaching 98 degrees!
We had 6 teams building and battling. The room was setup in a rectangle with tables, leaving the center open for battles. Build quality was solid so we had 5 rounds of points based battles and a lively “Last Bot Standing” finale. We had a rarely seen “double flip” for six points, and a four point play when a robot was flipped and then pushed outside the arena!
