HackerOne Robot Tech Team Building Sets Blazing Build Time
HackerOne hosted a Robot Tech Team Building for people from all divisions of the company in the hills of Orinda. At a sprawling estate on top of one of the many spectacular mountains overlooking stunning views of Suisun Bay, San Pablo Bay, Berkeley and parts of San Francisco Bay, we made use of all parts of the home campus including the driveway, garage, living and dining rooms, and the back yard, including one team on a blanket “picnic style” on the grass.
The team in the living room – pictured here – and self-named “bounty killers” – won the build competition with a blazing time of 30:32 (30 minutes and 32 seconds), putting them safely in the top 5% of all teams and likely in the top 20 build times of all time. Two other teams finished shortly afterwards but do to the fact I had to run from the living room to both the driveway and backyard almost simultaneously – while adhering to the “no shoes inside” policy – it made getting a truly accurate time for the 2nd and 3rd place teams untenable.
I have to give the “following instructions perfectly” award to the entire group. They required no help or correction while building, getting every detail perfect, and also pointing out each small imperfection in the instructions with gentle questions to confirm they were seeing it correctly – extremely impressive!
As usual the robot battles stole the show. We quickly evolved into the all-bot melee where every team battled with success. I finally forced them to keep score one time so we could get a formal winning team and some non-winners. Teal balloons won after they actually counted their score and realized they had more than the required 10 points. They quietly announced “11” – and we all made them confirm before applauding and unceremoniously moving on with a few more battles before I had to go.
A huge thank you to HackerOne for an enthusiastic event, an epic venue, and some great battles!
