School Makeover Corporate Charity Event with Verizon Wireless
Dallas Texas was the most recent site of a School Makeover Corporate Charity Event with Verizon Wireless. Verizon Wireless partnered with TeamWorx Team Building to provide a School Makeover to Harmony Science Academy including painting the entire High School and Middle School. In addition Verizon Wireless partnered with technology and furniture vendors to create three brand new technology rooms – two at the high school and one at the middle school.
The technology rooms included updated “WiFi Cafe” type decor, and advanced technology that mimics “NCIS” (the TV show) type individual to group learning facilitated by interactive technology at the student level, and a the class level. Students can investigate solutions to problems on individual tablet workstations, and then share their results with the class, or in small groups on larger share screens. The design was adapted to fit the leagal requirements stipulated by the state for a secure testing facility, and at the same time doubles as a flexible technology learning environment.
Over 650 people from Verizon Wireless descended on Harmony High School and Middle School, breaking up into teams and painting the inside of the school five different bright colors. The total job included hallways, classrooms, two cafeterias, and one gymnasium. The project took just under 2 hours to complete, with every team finishing or being helped by other teams to complete the project! The event was helped by teachers and alumni, some of whom greeted the Verizon employees at buses downtown at the Omni Dallas Hotel and rode with them to the event, and others who stayed onsite at the schools to greet the buses and direct people where to go.
Harmony was chosen from many potential Dallas candidates because of its unique combination of high percentages of students from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods and incredible test results, college attendance ratios, and percentage of STEM majors. 100% of their students qualify for free lunch, and 100% of students are accepted by colleges, with 66% choosing STEM majors! Amazing and truly unique results that should inspire others in education to take notice.
It was an amazing experience to work with Carrie Redmond and Murtaza Nazeeri (pictured above with TeamWorx president Wayne Bennett) from Harmony Science Academy. They were incredibly gracious in letting Verizon Wireless and TeamWorx invade their school, although for a really good cause. Without their extra time and leadership the event wouldn’t have worked!
