Virtual Robot Build Event
A Virtual Robot Build Event with Bill (formerly Bill.com) was a huge success. 4 teams of 4 people each consisting of: 3 onsite persons and 1 offsite person, all successfully built robots!
Each team had one virtual participant who was connected via a Zoom breakout room and a laptop with 3 participants that were located onsite at the corporate HQ. The Robot Battles 1 team building event includes four parts that must be built simultaneously and then assembled together.
To make the virtual team building interesting and engaging, we took out one of the four instruction sheets from the onsite team, while giving a link to those same instructions to the offsite teammates. Virtual teammates then guided the teams through the process of building that part of the robot via video conference. This allowed the virtual teammates to have an integral role in the success of the team, and it challenged onsite folks with building something using only virtual guidance; which is also a great way to train your team to be better and more accurate listeners and communicators.
The communication was excellent between the virtual teammates and their teams with a lot of back and forth, agreeing on terms, describing parts in detail, and ultimately getting on the exact same page together. Each team completed the battle robots on-time, and we had multiple rounds of melee style robot combat. Virtual teammates watched with pride as their robots scored points and flipped robots!
