Zymergen Sets New Record Robot Build Time
Robot Build World Records are not broken very often. In the history of the TeamWorx Robot Build World Record it has been broken every four to six months on average, or once in every 100 to 150 events. Zymergen broke the record twice in one week! Team Z-Bots set a spectacular new mark of 22:35! The new World Record.
One of the themes of Zymerweek 2018 was to help facilitate people meeting people from other departments. In true Zymerweek style, this amazing team of robot builders was made up of people from no less than 4 different departments: “Test Centers” “Automation” “Data Science” and “Engineering”. When pushed, we elicited some of the secrets of success from our new champions on team Z-bot; one thing was clear: Zymergen hires smart people who have demonstrated excellent teamwork ability. They also mentioned that collaboration was a natural part of the their business process, which requires working together to solve projects on a regular basis.
One might wonder what they do? As with our previous champions from Altium Live 2018, what they do takes some listening and deep comprehending, and someone to boil it down to some useful analogies that work for the proletariat or the scientific non-initiated among us. What we gleaned from our deep listening was that they are essentially “masters of fermentation” and are able to significantly increase the efficiency of the fermentation process for a large amount of businesses and industries. Similar to how VMware is able to significantly increase the efficiency of any cloud computing environment/system/warehouse, Zymergen has ubiquitous application among any business or industry that uses fermentation and could benefit from saving money.
In addition, for anyone who has baked at scale (large amounts), and also baked at home, recipes don’t always scale in direct proportion. In other words. multiplying all of the ingredients of a great recipe for 10 cookies by 1,000 doesn’t equal 10,000 great (or good) cookies. One has to make 10,000 cookies several times and figure out how to adjust the recipe to work in scale. Zymergen can do this with a fermentation process at a scale approaching infinite.
