Bicycle Building Charity Event at Rice University
MBA students at Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business have partnered with TeamWorx and local Houston TX charities over more than 5 years to do a Bicycle Building Charity Event and give away dozens of bicycles . The Dream Builders Bicycle Building Charity Event is an excellent way for students to get to know each other better during orientation week. The students are placed on teams of 10 people each and work together on as many of 16 different challenges as possible. Students learn how others approach leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and communication and build lasting friendships all in about an hour and a half.
At the Bicycle Building Charity Event at Rice University we worked with a local school that has over 90% minority students from challenging neighborhoods and has over 90% of students at or above grade level. A unique combination of academic success under the most challenging environment. The school rewarded students with perfect attendance with the bicycles donated by Rice University. The school has always been close geographically to Rice University, however infinitely far from interacting in the same cultures. Once we bridged the gap between them they both found they have a lot in common and a friendship emerged naturally between MBA students and Middle School Students.
The students also learn a great deal about each other. Each team receives a competition kit filled with team building challenges and activities. The harder the challenge to get correct the more money can be earned. Leadership determined how to attack the larger challenge of how to earn the most money, while teamwork determined the execution of attacking the challenges with the most efficient use of human resources possible.
The connection to the community, to the young students, and to each other makes this an integral part of the program for many MBA students.
