General Mills Leverages Robot Team Training to Improve Job Site Safety
Lodi CA is a small town south of Sacramento that is increasingly being known for excellent wineries and a growing food culture. General Mills is an integral part of this community and also takes safety extremely seriously. They took the time to celebrate a record safety year by refocusing on the principles that make this culture possible with a Robot Team Training. Integrating lessons from their playbook into ourRobot Team Training event was a natural fit. Many of the processes that go into successfully building a robot also apply to safety: “Measure twice cut once”, strategy, planning, 360 awareness, teamwork, communication, real time decision making and adapting, all come into play.
Teams were challenged to use the same principles that lead to job site safety while competing to build a robot faster than the other teams. The result was fabulous because every fiber of their human essence wanted to beat the other teams which meant go faster, however true success was measured by how safe they were in the process. The conflicting tension created made teams truly think about safety and efficiency as they progressed towards completing the robot.
This is a great example of how to leverage interactive team building programs to become meaningful training experiences. A Robot Team Training about job safety actually allows employees to practice the safety protocols under pressure, and with their peers. The shared experience provides added incentive through the competitive process, and additional support to get it right from your teammates. At the end of the event employees shared examples of best practices base don examples from the robot build,.
After valuable learning in the Robot Team Training, we moved to a more frivolous and fun part of the program and competed in a series of robot competitions. An amazing day with General Mills, and a rewarding outing to Lodi where growth is on the rise!
