Team Building for Engineers Robot Building with Edwards Life Sciences
Team Building for Engineers and Robot Team Building are a great match. Edwards Life Sciences was the first group to debut our new Speed and Skill robot model and a s a result were guaranteed to set a World Record for Model 2. They set the bar at 39 minutes and 34 seconds to build the Model 2 Speed and Skill Robot. The previous model tapped out with a World Record time of 32:07 set by Zymergen and never again broken. Several teams broke 33 minutes over the 6 month period but none approached 32:07.
It will be interesting and intriguing to see how long Edwards Life Sciences initial time for Model 2 will last. The team at Edwards Life Sciences that set the record demonstrated many of the qualities of winning teams. They began building immediately and they had a team captain who looked ahead and kept people engaged in a seamless process of building. Team Building for Engineers should be tough and challenging. Problem solving and communication under a competitive pressure and time pressure requires focus and concentration, patience and trust, and a desire to “get it right” and not necessarily “be right.” This team demonstrated all of these attributes.
The Robot Speed and Skill competition and team building is a great way to engage your entire group at one time because all of the competitions require all of the people on your team to participate. Everyone must drive/control the robot one time during each competition, and there are six consecutive competitions. The one exception is the finale where each team chooses their best driver and attempts to pop a balloon with a lighted match!
Because the teams built the robot they can also fix it and modify it if necessary. This comes in handy over six competitions as even well made robots have some loosening of parts. Team Building for Engineers should be fun and challenging, and the robot team building Speed and Skill competitions meet this criteria perfectly.
