Oracle Robot Building Event Sets Blazing Time
Oracle hosted a robot building event at their campus in Redwood City CA for the “A” Team – “If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.”
The A-Team represented 6 countries from around the world and some of Oracle’s top talent. When a customer has a problem that can’t be solved, or a project they can only imagine, the A Team steps in – assembling their talent, resources and worldwide knowledge – to make it work.
Our robot challenge presented just such a challenge – except in a vacuum with no real consequences – in other words they could use their sharpened skills for fun! And they did!
Team War Machine posted a top 15 build time of 27:45 – trailing only a few teams out of thousands over two plus years – such as Zymergen who holds the top two times including the World Record at 22:35, Altium, who posted a time of 23:50 last October, team Dingleberries from Astra Rockets at 23:56, previous World Record holders Chowbotics, who on on May 31, 2018 posted a time of 25:57, team Old Texas from Astra Rockets posted a time of 24:40, Lyft posted a time of 25:17 and Abbott posted a time of 25:52 both in April of 2019 (last month).
The battles were won by War Machine who lived up to their name, but only after a closely contested battle. We battled inside a corner office condensed into a robot battle-arena-feeling space, small enough to enhance the action quite significantly! We yelled and shouted as battles swayed either way. Although War Machine won the most total battles, the action was intense and my feeling was that each battle could have gone either way.
The format was 2 v 2 which invites teamwork and strategy into a multi-bot format. Although in most battles, once a single robot goes down the 2 v 1 format yields a quick victory, we had 2 battles where the single robot came back and beat both robots – very exciting!
