Outdoor Team Building with Mutual Housing California!
Outdoor Team Building in Sacramento has been revitalized with a creative new event that leverages the beauty of Sacramento’s public murals. Mutual Housing California is an amazing organization with the mission of revitalizing low income neighborhoods through public private partnerships. They deserved some re-energizing for themselves and Mural Blocks was the answer!
We hosted 25 employees and five teams on R street in Sacramento – in the first ever Mural Blocks event! Mural Blocks works great in any area with a high density of public murals. We chose R street as our first venue because of its incredibly friendly pedestrian environment, density of murals, convenience to downtown, and overall hipness factor.
Teams The Knights Who Say Ni, Honey Badgers, Mutual on a Mission, The Defaults, and Cinnamon Chicken (cool name) all began at 14th and R and traversed a course that took them all the way to 9th. Each team must find and decode six murals – one on each side of a block. Honey Badgers were the clear winners finishing the course in a spectacular time of 1 hour and 21 minutes – an average of about 12 minutes per puzzle! Following about 12 minutes later was team Cinnamon Chicken at 1 hour and 33 minutes. The remaining teams finished 5 out of 6 or finished the 6th puzzle right at the 2 hour mark. A great distribution of results for our first event.
Teams use the colors on the blocks to match to colors on murals they find in their explorations, then use the image to solve a puzzle made up of 20 unique blocks each with part of the mural. People rotate the blocks to find matching colors, then try to piece together the puzzle.
The puzzles are challenging because they offer no border clues, and unlike puzzle pieces the blocks give no clues based on shape. The result is an amazing collaborative and very verbal problem solving that engages all 5 teammates. The combination of walking and discovering beautiful murals, and collaborative team problem solving, makes for the ideal outdoor team building event!
