Robots Battling Team Event Uber Rides to Victory!
At a Robots Battling Team Event just South of Santa Rosa CA, hosted by the sprawling and luxurious Double Tree golf campus, Uber charged 200 IT professionals with the task of building and battling robots. The energy in the room was measured in gigawatts as teams buzzed at the chance to build the robot faster than their peers, and possibly break a world record build time. Sure enough, team “8 Brains and Me” won the build competition and finished top ten all-time with a scorching time of 48:40 (forty eight minutes and forty seconds).
All of the teams finished a robot successfully under 1 hour which left a good amount of time for battles. Teams Puppies 1, Running with Scissors,Thighs of the Machines, Fire Wall-E, Techno Olive, Wall-E, Team Morale Support, JARVIS, Fan, and BBots all had victories in battle, but it was team Morale Support that had multiple victories to set them apart as the battle champion!
The build teams used many of the available supports to help build accurate robots. We saw many teams watching our robot tech help videos on their phones to see the processes done visually. Others raced to see the built bots first hand and used the final example as a helpful guide for tricky questions. And many summoned us to their table for hands on assistance or helpful answers. In general, the provided instructions are excellent guides that allow teams to build the robots with minimal or no help.
We were lucky for the robot battles part of the event as we moved to a basketball court just outside the ballroom. The surface was hard but with subtle grooves and stickiness for better grip when playing basketball or tennis. The result for the battles was an above average amount of robot flips which always adds to the excitement and adrenaline filled cheering!
A huge thank you to Uber for a spectacular 15 bot melee barrage and battle, and some excellent building techniques demonstrated by all!
