San Jose Robot Team Building with Cadence
A San Jose Robot Team Building with Cadence took place outside in a COVID friendly environment. The patio included tables with shade umbrellas, a well placed tree in the center, and areas of clean(ish) concrete (with grip granulation) as our battle surface.
It was a sunny and warm day, however, as with many parts of the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley, if you start early enough in the day and you have shade, it can be an invigorating and pleasing environment. And we did have both of those things, beginning about 10:30 AM and wrapping up at noon; just in time for lunch!
Teamwork and communication were abundant. The main stakeholder for this event was keenly interested in folks having fun, and getting to know each other better. As the emcee, I de-emphasized competing to break a world record, and accentuated the focus on taking your time and building a quality robot for the battle competition.
The same Robot Battles event can take a different focus depending on what is most important to the stakeholder, or on the feel they want, or specific outcomes. Most of our robot battles events appeal to competitive audiences in the tech and engineer spaces, however, we have seen great success with groups of all kinds looking for a novel experience. If you can build IKEA furniture, you can build a robot!
This group still finished their robots right on the 45 minute average build time overall. More importantly, they had a great time conversing and building a quality battle robot. And indeed the battles were super fun and took full advantage of the granulated concrete surface. The well built quality bots lasted over a dozen rounds of points based combat, and an additional last robot standing battle.
