STEM High School Teambuilding
A STEM High School Teambuilding event with Grace Davis High School in Modesto CA was a learning experience for future Health Career students!
Students from the Health Careers Academy at Grace Davis attended SJVC private college for a day of learning and fun. We started the day with interactive activities prepared by the colleges administrative staff related to health care including “how to take off gloves without contaminating yourself or others” using food coloring and shaving cream!
We progressed into the classrooms for both interactive activities like CPR and (pretend) Pharmacy Fulfillment, and to view actual classes in action. Students had the opportunity to ask current students questions about the school experience and why they chose to pursue a career in Health. About 50 students were divided into 4 groups of 12-14, and each group toured the circuit of 4 unique experiences.
After learning more about the college and about careers in Health, we embarked upon a STEM Robot Build and Battle team building event. Teams of 4-5 students competed to build the battle robot faster than each other and for the World Record. The winning team, pictured above, credited great teamwork, each person doing their part, and their team captain with bringing them all together, for their success!
After building we moved across the 2nd floor to the break room which was cleared out and reserved for the battles. All 9 teams completed their robot and we were able to complete 5 rounds of robot combat giving everyone a chance to battle!
Robotics is an excellent tie-in with Health careers as many procedures and processes once done by humans are now done by robots. Intuitive Surgical is an example of a worldwide leader in robotic surgery, and a client of ours! High school and College students today will interact with robots for their entire careers, and the with greater frequency the longer they stay in the profession. The robot build and battle is an excellent way to become comfortable with robots, understand their basic functioning, and ultimately have fun with them before they become our overlords (just kidding on the last part :).
A huge thank you to the Health Academy at Grace Davis High School for sponsoring this field trip. We look forward to doing it again next year with a new batch of awesome Health Career students!
