Bain Capital Battle Robots
Bain Capital battle robots at Corporate Retreat. Thanks to our partners at Ethos Event Collective, we were connected with a fun weekend retreat with up and coming stars for Bain Capital.
The attendees were bunkered up at the Lodge at Marconi on Tomales Bay (technically in West Marin) for rustic ambiance and a partial outdoor experience. Our meeting room was perfect for building and battling robots, which was just one of the well planned activities the attendees had on their weekend schedules.
The group was clearly high achievers as they instantly gelled as competitive teams looking to build the robot faster and better than the other teams. They were also keenly interested in the potential modifications possible with the robots. Many teams pushed the boundaries of what is possible, living “comfortably in the grey areas.” The result was that each of the 8 teams had a uniquely designed attack arm, and other modifications that provided questionable advantage.
One team finished in a remarkably fast time of 33:25 (thirty three minutes and twenty five minutes) placing them 68th all-time between Google and Meta.
For the battles, we moved up one building to an open meeting room taped with dual color tape for a highlighted striped look – courtesy of Nikki from Ethos. The battles were super fun and engaging, with a lot of cheering and yelling. A term called “the IKEA Effect,” whereby a group feels an outsized attachment to something they build, was on full display as teams tested their innovations and building competency against other teams in real time!
The battles included 5 rounds of “points based battles” and a finale of the last bot standing! The finale came down to two bots going head-to-head for about 3-mintues with relentless attacks on each other and even better defense.
A huge thank you to Ethos Event Collective and Bain Capital for inviting us to build and battle robots!
