Sacramento Robot Battles Team Building at Sacramento State University
A Sacramento Robot Battles Team Building event was a huge success at the CSUS WELL. The WELL is the super wellness center located on campus attached to the Sacramento State Hornets football stadium. You can see the football goal posts in the back of this picture. The football stadium made for a dramatic and beautiful background for our robot building and battling.
The WELL offers numerous recreational opportunities including rock climbing, weight lifting, basketball, racquetball, self defense, aquatics, and more, and intramural sports leagues! it also offers stunning meeting rooms for events including the one we used for this event. As you can imagine it takes all types of expertise and experience to run a gigantic facility like the WELL, and that was what made this event really great. Folks from HR, accounting, marketing, executive management, program directors, facility management, and other roles I am forgetting all came together to build one working robot!
The teamwork was truly exceptional. If we had a hall of fame of teamwork pictures I could have taken several throughout this event – with multiple folks engaging the robot simultaneously and communicating in real time. All three teams finished with fast build times which left a little extra time for battles. We pushed the robots to near collapse, and then took a minute to refurbish them, and then we battled several more times until our time expired – robots still looking for more. It was a great example of the resiliency of the robots so long as folks know how to repair them. The WELL employees were so much fun to be around, their warmth for each other evident, and the surprising skill and acumen for battling, all led to a spectacular afternoon in Sacramento!
Another karmic element of this specific event was more personal to me. The WELL is the ultimate manifestation of a small temporary trailer in the Sac State parking lot over 30 years ago, initially called Mountain Wolf Adventures. Mountain Wolf Adventures eventually became Peak Adventures when they moved into the brand new Student Union about 20 years ago. My mother started Mountain Wolf Adventures and managed both Mountain Wolf and Peak Adventures for several years. The WELL is a tribute of the most magnificent type to her creative and fearless energy that started something from nothing, and watched it grow to be a superstar!
“Our event went well and everyone really enjoyed it. This activity was done at the very end of a long day of meetings and, honestly, some people were feeling a bit drained and weren’t even sure they had enough energy left for the activity. Most of them showed up anyway and were glad that they did! We even had a few folks who just wanted to be spectators and ended up jumping in and participating. There was so much energy and excitement and so many laughs when it came time to battle the robots!”
