What Happened Summary

Anti-Matter – the most valuable singular item in the world – was stolen from MatterMatters Corp. The theft happened at 12:32 PM inside the office of CEO Ethan Meyers during a power outage. There are only four suspects who had Means, Motive, & Opportunity. The suspects are:

  • Ethan (CEO)
  • Rolph (Engineer)
  • Vivian (Head of Security)
  • Dominique (Executive Assistant)

THE THEFT WAS COMPLETED BY ONLY ONE OF THE SUSPECTS.

Rolph was in the office at the time of the theft. Ethan claims he was knocked unconscious when the power went out. Rolph and Ethan’s stories conflict about why Rolph was there. Vivian is on vacation and claims not to be on premise at the time of the theft.

Outline for Success

  • Your mission is to gather evidence and build a case using evidence against 1 of the 4 suspects.
  • Try to rule out suspects when possible.
  • At the end, you will submit a Final Narrative (see STEP 5 below) and a winning team will be determined by how well you build the case.

STEP 1: Read the Confidential Brief Together as a Team

  • Confidential Brief
  • 1 person share their screen and
  • 1  person volunteer to read the document aloud.

STEP 2: Discover Evidence

STEP 3: Match Evidence to Suspects

Once you complete the specific tasks for your role, as a team share the Physical Evidence document on the screen and start matching evidence to suspects.

Print and/or use the Evidence Organization Chart , or create a similar document on your own, to record which suspect each piece of evidence is linked.

STEP 4: Build Your Case

Once you match Evidence to Suspects, start to build your case by:

  • Looking for inconsistencies and finding out who is lying and who is telling the truth
  • Looking for evidence to rule out suspects (it is easier to rule out suspects than to prove they did it)
  • Using evidence to break suspects in interrogation and learn more
  • Using  evidence to build a case against 1 of the 4 suspects
  • Creating one or more narratives as to how the Anti Matter was stolen and by who.
  • Finding a “Smoking Gun” – a piece of evidence that puts someone at the crime scene, at the time of the theft.

STEP 5: Create a Final Narrative

  1. Who did it: Name of Suspect
  2. Evidence that proves who did it
  3. Evidence that rules out any of the suspects
  4. Brief explanation of how it happened

Submit your Final Narrative on time via direct chat to Wayne Bennett from the main room to be considered for the winning team.

NOTE: You must leave your breakout room and go to the Main Room and submit your Final Narrative with your Team #

  • Have your Lead Investigators write out your Final Narrative in advance and have it ready to copy and paste in the main room.
  • You can submit your Final Narrative between 10:55 AM and 11:10 AM.
  • The winning team will have the best case using evidence against the correct suspect.
  • Scoring factors include: the “Smoking Gun”, ruling out suspects, amount and quality of evidence, clarity of narrative, and completeness of narrative.
  • If teams are tied, the fist one submitted will win. Also consider, earlier submissions will be read more thoroughly than last minute submissions.

Format for Final Narrative

  • Team # (= Breakout Room #)
  • Who Did It?
  • Case Against Guilty Suspect
  • Case for Ruling Out Specific Suspects
  • Brief overview of what happened
