Robot Battles San Francisco Lyft Soars!
Robot Battles San Francisco city style with Lyft produced a spectacular build time and some truly amazing robot battles. Team Do Not Open posted the fourth fastest time ever at 25:17 (twenty five minutes and seventeen seconds). They follow only Zymergen who holds the top two times including the World Record at 22:35, and Altium, who posted a time of 23:50 last October to set the new World Record at the time. They finished just ahead of previous World Record holders Chowbotics, who on on May 31, 2018 posted a time of 25:57. Team Wall-E also posted a time of 32:45 a top 5% time and a winning time on any other day!
When asked about their secret to success they said “At first we were not following your advice from the introduction, then we realized this was the best route. We looked to help each other, be proactive, use all hands all the time, and communicated vociferously.” Truly an exceptional building performance and one for the history books for sure!
The battles were equally impressive with the intensity progressively rocketing up as they became more skilled at combat. In the end, Five Guys tied with Do Not Open with 2 wins and a tie each for top honors. We were privileged to see many spectacular take-downs and robot flips including a “robot arm to robot arm snag and drag” one of rarest and coolest forms of battle victory. The momentum of the battles turned when Five Guys turned lemons to lemonade by adapting their broken attack arm into a joust like battering ram.
The battering ram style bot was highly effective. The energy savings by not having a moving arm, and the low design feature due to its custom install, allowed it to be somewhat of a bully, pushing the other robots around and flipping two robots in route to their first victory. The final battle featured some hysterical moments with “Sloppy Joe” battling with its battery flopping on the ground and electronics board swinging wildly about, a two wheeled robot, and a three wheeled robot who almost won!
A huge thank you to Lyft for inviting us out to work with your team, We look forward to more talented robot builders and battlers from Lyft!
