Intel Team Building Tests Prototype for “Slasher” and “Flipper”
A Team Building Santa Clara event with Intel was a big success for many reasons, mostly because everyone had a great time building and battling robots. Team “DoneFirst” won the robot build competition with a time of 45:20 (forty five minutes and twenty seconds) – not bad for a team of 4 people. We recommend 6 to 7 people per team to have a chance at breaking the world record time of 23:50 (twenty three minutes and fifty seconds) or to have a chance at getting into the top 5% with a time under 35 minutes.
Team “BuiltRight” won the team versus-team-competition with an overall record of 3 and 1 (3 wins to 1 defeat). More than prognostic, the team names were subsequent to the results and indicative of a dry sense of humor.
This Intel group was willing, thrilled and excited to test out two new prototypes we are testing for future competitions. In honor of Tombstone and Bronco from the BattleBots TV competition series, we are testing a horizontal spinner with prototype name “Slasher” and a flipper code named “Flipper”.
Overall preliminary results showed Slasher with a higher favorable rating. It is easier to pop balloons as it requires only one servo action and therefore allows the driver to sync drive train and attack arm in coordinated action. Essentially the driver replaces the force of the pick and peck servo with the drive train – a significant power advantage! The trade off is a shorter and less stable overall structure which led to easy flipping by opponents. Drivers of Slasher had to be aware of impending contact, however in a melee this isn’t always easy to do.
Flipper had some success flipping robots, but at least in preliminary testing Flipper’s success was isolated to a melee format where they could surprise opponents occupied with other combatants. It required a head-on flip which is hard to bait a willing participant into.
Our booking expert Libby also found them an outstanding venue for only $150! Great job Libby!
Thank you Intel for an excellent event and for testing prototypes hopefully you will see again (in improved form) in later events!
