Robot Team Building with EY GigNow
Palo Alto Team Building is always a fun experience. EY GigNow has the feel of a company about to rocket into the profit-sphere and growth sphere. Their roughly 2,000 square foot office in the heart of Palo Alto on High Street is jammed full of computers and people intensely focused on perfection. In addition a team of AI experts roam around working on laptops and in corner couches – one mentioning to me “It’s AI – it does all the work” … Ha. Our event was in the “garden” – a portion in the back of the office wisely saved for communal events, informal meetings, and extra spontaneous work spaces. It is decorated with soothing colors and plants and meets the purpose well.
They mentioned that they have all-hands meetings using a “conch” like system (see “Lord of the Flies“) to identify the speaker in the room. They have made one clever modern day adaptation as well. In any workplace there are always a few sick people at any one time, and in the case of the “conch” it could lead potentially to passing germs around the office – a terrible unexpected consequence of a time honored system. So, they changed the “conch” to a soccer ball – passed and received by feet; brilliant!
They divided into two teams – the Rebels and the Guardians – and I relayed to the troops that the instructions are like the Force – very powerful source of good or evil depending on how you wield there powers. It worked as the teams leveraged the instructions to successfully build two robots fully capable of combat. We introduced two more robots to increase the battles and get more people involved. One executive stopped by between conference calls just to battle for a few minutes!
A huge thank you to a really cool company making waves in the contractor employment space, and good luck moving forward!
