Robot Racing Takes the Track at Google and Apex
Put a room full of engineers and tech-minded problem solvers in front of a pile of metal channels, motors, wheels, and wires, and something great happens. That’s exactly what we saw at two recent TeamWorx Robot Racing events, one with Google and one with Apex.
Each event brought together about 50 people split into six teams. Every team started with the same kit and the same goal: design, build, and wire a robot racer tough enough to survive the track. What came out of those builds never stops amazing us. Smart, technical groups like these always find new ways to solve the same problem. We saw long-wheelbase speedsters, compact bruisers on oversized tires, and a few designs we’d honestly never seen before, all of them race-ready.
Why was Robot Racing the perfect fit for Google and Apex? Because it rewards exactly what these teams do every day. Building takes planning, division of labor, and quick troubleshooting when a wire or bracket won’t cooperate. Racing adds strategy, adrenaline, and plenty of friendly trash talk. Everyone has a role, whether they’re holding the screwdriver, reading the diagram, or driving.
Once the robots were finished, we kicked off on our standard full-contact oval track, where bumping, blocking, and passing are all part of the game. Then we switched to the Figure 8 Max Destruction course, where the crossover point turns every lap into a collision waiting to happen. Multiple heats meant every team got its moment, and more than a few robots needed a quick pit-stop repair between races. That’s team building in action.
The feedback from Apex said it best:
“Robot Racing was fantastic! Ticked all the boxes (racing, building, fun). We had a great turnout and people really seemed to enjoy it. Jeff did a great job, was there helping and navigating. Will definitely highly recommend. Thank you so much!!”

A big thank-you to both teams for bringing the creativity and the competitive spirit.
