Zymergen Robot Team Break Robot Build Record by 1 Second!
Robot Team “Bolivia” broke the robot team building world record build time by just 1 second on Monday December 10, 2018 in Emeryville CA. The previous record was 23:50 (twenty three minutes and fifty seconds) set on October 3rd at Altium Live 2018 in San Diego. Team Bolivia posted a time of 23:49 – just 1 second under the world record – in a thrilling finish. Their robot faced the scrutiny of two of our robot judges before being deemed sound, fit for combat, and correctly assembled.
Team Bolivia competed with other teams as a part of Zymerweek 2018 which featured many fun activities, new company swag, and 4 TeamWorx team events scheduled over four days. This was the first of three robotics events, giving Zymergen employees two more opportunities to break the company record, and thereby the world record. Teams Tecan Fire and Ex-Machina finished second and third respectively with times just under 35:00 minutes.
With the sounds of BART close by and an ever present part of life in Emeryville, our robots were inspired to perform up to a higher and inspired standard. Our coliseum included the participants and also a dynamic crowd of people moving by for meetings, free lunch, or coffee and a snack. They couldn’t help but stop and cheer, or at least gaze, and sometimes jump in and participate, at the smashing of aluminum bodies and parts and the popping of balloons; sometimes in a staccato series of rapid succession and a sure sign of success.
The bots were built well in addition to being built quickly and therefore the battles lasted a long time and the skill of the teams increased quickly. It was a very inspiring start to the week and a truly amazing performance by team Bolivia – our current Robot Build World Champions!
