TASI Takes Sandcastle Building to Another Level on Del Monte Beach
TeamWorx recently joined the team from TASI Test and Automation for an afternoon of sandcastle building on beautiful Del Monte Beach in Monterey, California, and this group brought some serious engineering talent to the sand.
That probably shouldn’t be surprising. TASI Test and Automation works in advanced testing, inspection, automation and assembly, with engineering teams developing solutions for manufacturing and other technically demanding industries. Put a group like that in front of several tons of sand, buckets, shovels and a challenge to build something spectacular, and things can get interesting quickly.
Eight teams competed, and every castle was impressive.
The winning team, shown in our photo, took the competition to another level with a castle standing more than four feet tall. They used innovative construction techniques to achieve the extra height while maintaining excellent proportions throughout the structure. The scale was spot-on, and the finished castle had the flow and appearance of a professionally designed sand sculpture.
The judges were also impressed by the team’s artistic finishing, creative architectural elements and effective use of arches. Decorative features were integrated into the overall design rather than simply added at the end, resulting in a structure that looked intentional from top to bottom.
The other seven teams made judging anything but easy.
Throughout the beach we saw an incredible amount of detail: multiple bridges and arches, carefully carved stone walls, a working-looking drawbridge, the TASI name sculpted into the sand, tunnels, landscaping and detailed decorative elements using shells, feathers and other materials found on the beach. One team even constructed a small sand hut complete with a wooden door.
Perhaps most impressive was the scale of the entire event. Teams started with large, and in some cases enormous, sand mounds and then transformed them into expansive castles and landscapes rather than simply building a single tower.
For a company whose people spend their professional lives solving technical problems, designing systems and figuring out how to make things work, the challenge seemed like a natural fit. The TASI teams combined engineering, creativity, experimentation and teamwork; and the result was one of the strongest collections of sandcastles we’ve seen.
A fantastic afternoon on Del Monte Beach and a spectacular job by all eight teams.
